Why can very different property values both be in band G?

G spans almost £160,000 of the historical valuation scale, much wider than the intervals below it. An assessed 1991 value of £170,000 and one of £310,000 both fall inside G. They are examples of points in a range, not valuations of real homes.

Council Tax uses the category instead of charging a different amount for each pound of value inside it. At exactly £320,000 the historical assessment is still G; above that boundary it is H. If you want a full overview, see all England Council Tax band thresholds.

Is Council Tax band G twice band D?

No. G is fifteen-ninths of D, or one and two-thirds, before personal adjustments. H is the band whose standard charge is twice D. Confusing those relationships can materially overstate a household budget.

At the 2026/27 England average band D of £2,392, G is about £3,987. The F-to-G step is about £532, while G-to-H is about £797. The larger final step reflects eighteen parts for H rather than an equal increase for each successive letter.

A rising house price does not identify a new G charge

The £320,000 boundary is not today’s selling-price ceiling. A current estate-agent valuation over that amount does not, on its own, establish that the property belongs in H. Use the registered band and the correct historical valuation date.

If you suspect an incorrect record, confirm the address through the band lookup guide and collect relevant evidence before a valuation challenge. Do not substitute a general house-price multiplier for a property assessment.

What does the £100 announcement mean for band G?

England’s announced scope is A–D, so G is outside it. That boundary is separate from whether you can manage your current bills. Ask your council about help through Council Tax Reduction if needed. A high property band is not a statement of the occupant’s current income.

Questions about Council Tax band G

Does a home at the top of band G pay more than another G home?

Not because of its position within G. The standard G charge is a single amount for that locality. Actual household bills may differ because of discounts, reductions or other adjustments.

Is a 1991 valuation of exactly £320,000 in G or H?

It is within G in England. H covers historical values above £320,000. Do not apply this boundary to today’s asking price or to Welsh valuation bands.

Is Council Tax band G included in the £100 energy payment?

G is outside England’s announced A–D scope. Check other support schemes separately and use official updates rather than an unsolicited message promising a special G-band claim.
