Figures are each council’s published total for areas without a parish precept, including police and fire (in London, the Greater London Authority precept). Choose a council for every band A–H, monthly costs and what the charge includes.

Why Council Tax differs between councils

Each council sets its own band D charge, and police, fire and in some areas a combined authority add their own precepts. In London every borough adds the same Greater London Authority precept (£510.51 at band D in 2026/27), so the difference between boroughs is the borough’s own share — Westminster and Wandsworth keep theirs unusually low. That is why the same band can cost hundreds of pounds more in one city than another. The England average band D for 2026/27 is £2,392.
